DVD Active has a bunch of info on the upcoming release of Dreamworks' "Shrek the Third," including the box art.



I love it when they put quotes from some film critic on the cover like "The best Shrek yet!" If you are standing and looking at "Shrek the Third" on a DVD shelf, is what Mortomer Diphole of the Village Voice Times Tribune really going to sway you into purchasing it?

As for this blog post, I'd like to mention that Rod Morf of the Post Star Report Magazine had this to say:

Dreamwork's latest ogre flick "Shrek the Third" moved into the top 5 of highest grossing CG Animated films following its weekend performance.



According to the list, via Box Office Mojo, "Shrek the Third" passed "Monsters Inc," "Toy Story 2" and "Cars" to take the number 5 spot on the list. Not only that, but it only needs to make $3 million more to pass "The Incredibles" and around $9 million more to pass up the original "Shrek."

No wonder the studio had no problem greenlighting a 4th installment.

Shrek the Third - The Review

After watching "Shrek the Third" this weekend, I've officially written off the critics when it comes to CG films, and you should too.



I'm not as big of a Shrek fan as some others may be. I ranked the first 2 films 10th on my personal "Dave's Top 10 Animated Films of All Time That He Can Remember" list. So if my math serves me correctly, I've got 9 other CG films I'd choose to watch over those two.

What's my point?

The point is that I'm not just some Shrek fanboy (sounds creepy), and I understand the films have their faults. That being said, for "Shrek the Third" to be pulling an overall score of 43% over at Rotten Tomatoes is utterly ridiculous.

The first two films ranked in the high 80s to low 90s, so I walked in expecting a huge drop in quality, which there simply isn't. The visuals are stunning (though the human models creep me out), the animation is great, and the performances are what they've always been, which is to say consistent. The film was funny in spots, touching in others, and exciting throughout.

The bottom line is that if you liked the first two films, or if you're just a fan of animation in general, you'll find something to enjoy in "Shrek the Third." Is it original? Not really, but I'm tired of originality being the only measuring stick for critics. If something is entertaining, then it's just plain entertaining, and isn't that why we go to a film like "Shrek the Third" in the first place?

While a 43% isn't quite the travesty that the 32% score for "TMNT" (or the 66% for "Meet the Robinsons" was for that matter) was, when coupled with "Shrek the Third" having the third biggest box office opening of all time, even beating out the two higher-rated prequels, it proves that critics are even more irrelevant than ever before.

Shrek the Third Opens Today

Ogre fans are already lining up to see Dreamworks' latest "Shrek" offering, "Shrek the Third," which opened in theaters all over the place today.



Critics aren't exactly in love with "The Third," as the film has only managed a score of 43% over at Rotten Tomatoes, compared to an 89% for the first film and an 88% for the second.

I have to wonder how much of this low rating is that the bloom is officially off the rose for CG films. It will be interesting to see if the film really does compare that poorly to the first two, of critics are just lashing out at pretty much anything CG at this point.

Shrek the Third Reviews on Rotten Tomatoes

You know it's a slow news week when...

... I post an article about the recall of Shrek headbands.



From what the recall notice says, apparantly on some headbands a wire has poked through the fabric and caused injury. In one reported case, the wire even killed an entire village somewhere in South America. Other reports claim the wires are simply getting drunk and squatting in abandoned apartment buildings.

Either way, the headbands have been recalled, and you should send any you have back. First of all, you wouldn't want the wire to come loose and poke your brain, and second of all, unless you're a Solid Gold Dancer, people really don't wear headbands anymore.

Green and Lean

CG Society has a great article on the technology behind "Shrek the Third."



Many new characters were created for the third installment, and the ten-year-old models from the first Shrek were rebuilt. Shrek, Fiona, Donkey, and any character from the first film needed a complete upgrade while maintaining the familiarity of the first film’s characters. Shrek and Fiona were also required to don the garb of royalty, including high heels and a cinched waist, something the original models were not prepared to handle.

Taking the opportunity to include subtle improvements, Modesto and Cutler added additional resolution to the case used for the muscles and face to improve the control of the skin over the eyes and between the brows. They also increased the muscle resolution on the face in order to add more control to the mouth and eyebrows, and added details like the folding bags of skin over the eyes, sliding skin over the jaw area, and dimples.

And by "great," I mean "extremely boring to most people."

However for those of you who do get bored reading these types of things there are lots of pretty pictures to go along with it.

New Shrek the Third Production Blog

Not to be out blogged and/or podcasted by Pixar, Dreamworks has placed their latest production blog for "Shrek the Third" up over at the film's official website.



In this "Behind the Scenes" blog, we get to see how a storyboard is taken through layout, animation, and then to final render. It's quick and not overly informative, much like my form of love making.

Just one question though: Isn't the scene with the toenails exactly like the one in "Dumb and Dumber"?

First the French get fries, and now a poster that some might say is better than the US version of the "Shrek the Third" poster.

Shrek Website Update

Not to be outdone by the "Surf's Up!" website update, Dreamworks has updated the "Shrek the Third" website to include anything and everything related to the big green guy.



The site now includes videos, games, a history of Shrek, and much more. I played Shrek Sudoku for about an hour and am now convinced that I might in fact be the dumbest person alive. Well... that and the fact that I have test results from the government to prove it.

Shrek the Third A Whopping 81 Minutes Long!

Clocking in at just 21 minutes longer than an episode of "The Gilmore Girls," Dreamworks' upcoming "Shrek the Third" is hoping for repeat viewers.



While describing "Shrek the Third" as "good" and "a worthy successor" to its blockbuster forebears, Katzenberg suggested that his green ogre could have an advantage over Spidey and Pirate Jack Sparrow during the "unprecedented" month of blockbusters.

"We are the only family film, the only PG-rated movie and we are 81 minutes long. That pretty much means we are going to tend to get one-and-a-half to two shows for every one of theirs because they are longer films," Katzenberg said.

While I believe in the "too much of a good thing," theory and don't like my movies to ever push into the three hour range, is 1 hour and 21 minutes really all they could come up with? Granted, if it's a rock solid 81 minutes, I could care less, but it just seems like they could have come up with an extra 10-20 minutes somewhere for the sequel to the highest grossing animated film of all time.

The new "Shrek the Third" trailer is up over on the tube of you.

You know... this really doesn't look half bad. I was really worried that it would be many of the same jokes from the first two films rehashed, but it looks like they are trying some new and fun things with the characters.

Should be worth the price of admission.

Apparantly, Empire Movies had the new trailer up, but have since been asked to take it down by the folks at Paramount. In it's place is a note:

So if you can manage to stomach another batch of people pretending to be mentally challenged and singing off key with the sole intention of getting on TV so that the former bass player for Journey, a crazy drunk, and a jerkhole snob with too much chest hair can tell them how terrible they sound, feel free to check out the trailer as well.

No that's not a typo. Apparantly someone over at Ain't It Cool News has seen an early screening of "Shrek the Third," and posted an early review.



Posting a review of a film that's still six months away from opening is a bit pointless, as the film could change so much between now and then. It would be like posting your review of a restaurant based on the breadsticks.

That being said, if you're ever in Washington, you should eat at Nana Carmella's, which has some of the best breadsticks I've ever tasted.

USA Today has posted a new article on "Shrek the Third," in which princesses must put aside their differences and help out Princess Fiona while Shrek is out of town.



"They are used to being rescued, not defending the kingdom themselves," says Chris Miller, director of the second sequel in the computer-animated franchise that has grossed nearly $1.5 billion worldwide. "Fiona has to convince them to shed that role and save their own happily ever after."

That's because Shrek (Mike Myers), who discovers he is ill-suited to rule the land himself, has gone off with sidekicks Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas) and Donkey (Eddie Murphy) to recruit the person who is next in line to the throne: high-schooler Artie (Justin Timberlake), who is destined to become King Arthur one day.

Boy, does this sound awesome! I can't wait to see... wait a minute... does that say Justin Timberlake? That really does say Justin Timberlake. Are you kidding me?

Oh well... I gave Ashton Kutcher a shot in "Open Season" and actually enjoyed his character a great deal, so maybe it'll be okay.

Tell me it will be okay.
